Cancer is a disease characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. These cells can infect healthy tissues in various parts of the body causing damage. Cancer may also spread from one part of the body to another. Cancer is best treated if detected early. Screening tests help detect cancer before you experience symptoms. In Ontario colorectal, breast and cervical cancers are screened for routinely. Talk to your doctor to learn about your risk for cancer, how to reduce your risk and which screening tests are recommended for you.
