Concurrent Disorders

People who suffer from mental health symptoms have a higher chance of being addicted than people who do not have a mental illness.  There are community programs that have an understanding specializing in the area of both mental health and addiction.

Concurrent conditions" or "concurrent disorders" is the term used when a person has a mental health diagnosis and also has a substance use or gambling problem. For example, someone with depression who also has a problem with marijuana has a concurrent disorder, as does a person who suffers from anxiety and also has problems with alcohol. Treatment for each case could be very different. There are residential programs and day programs available in the community. Talk to your family doctor, nurse or make a referral to our Mental Health team for more information.
